San Clemente Pier
A couple of weeks back, we started the day in San Clemente to meet up for breakfast with our friend Melissa. While we were there, I took a couple of shots, including the one here. Originally shot in color, cropped, converted to black and white, dodged/burned, curved, grained and bordered (all in Photoshop).
I know, again with the cheating, but when I was shooting B&W film and learning to print in the darkroom, I really loved the aesthetic of a full frame shot with that dark border. Granted, on film, being able to print full frame meant you essentially got it right at the capture. I felt like the resulting print was my reward for getting it at least framed right in the camera. Unfortunately, that’s not usually the lot I’m cast, so I love being able to go back and get a cool shot out of an otherwise ‘meh’ one and make it more like I wanted to see it, even if I didn’t when I clicked the shutter. Hooray for the digital do-over.

I really like the doctoring you did. You call it “cheating”, I think it made it look good.
I love how the knots in the wood really pop in black and white.
