Support Your Not-Quite-Local Photographer
© Joseph Szymanski
I came across photographer Joseph Szymanski’s website while on a surfing expedition the other day, specifically a post regarding Accessible Art, Free Photographs. As he states:
The Concept
Art should be accessible to everyone. I have always felt that if I had the means to do so I would give my work away, as the intent has never been solely to profit, but to create and share with those around me. I make no claim that my motives are pure. However, no amount of money in the world could convince me to stop doing what I do.The Experiment
In order to increase the accessibility of my own work, I have decided to offer a free 8×10 fiberbase print to anyone and everyone who would like one. The only catch is that you must make a minimum donation of $2.00 to cover the cost of postage.
Because I really liked the idea behind his experiment and wanted to get on board, I made a point to donate more than the mininum of $2.00 but ultimately less than the work is worth. What I received was a nicely-made print of a strong (at least to me) photographic piece of art and a short personal note of thanks from Joseph. I really hope his experiment is a success and that other photographers will see a similar opportunity to expose their work to a broader audience. As nice as it is that photographers share their work via the Web, there’s nothing quite like enjoying an actual print in person.
